Provided management with a strategy detailing the steps required to integrate the work-flow server and the Java transport service. 

As HP pulled together its application software portfolio the executives expected the various components to work effectively together.   General management made this an additional requirement for each factory. 

The HP work-flow server was developed in C++ and was distributed over a CORBA backbone.  A wide area guaranteed transport system had been developed by another factory in Java.  That division was proposing to develop integration with the work-flow server using Java native interfaces (JNI), a Java standard for interfaces.  I was asked to evaluate the proposed integration and provide recommendations back to the development director.  

I wrote recommendations to the development director proposing a specific integration strategy.  Main aspects were:
  • Met with the reliable messaging management and architects.  Reviewed their schedule and proposed solution - which was to use JNI to interface with our C++ server.  I explained the problems with the asynchronous call back model that we used within the work-flow server Application Program Interface (API) and also raised the concerns of my team about the current state of JNI. 
  • Met with central research lab team who had been participating in the architecture of a Java/CORBA bridge and had reviewed implementations of JNI.  General feeling was that current implementations would have portability and call back issues.  It was agreed that a remote network interface would be preferable. 
  • To ensure the message bus team would maintain their schedule recommended allocating resource from our team to help develop the remote network interface to Java.   

Recommendations were accepted.   Work-flow server architect co-developed design and implementation with messaging team.
