Designed process for partner contributions

Proposed, and designed, a process to enable novel configurations of HP Internet Usage Manager (IUM) developed in the field, or by partners, to be contributed back with support costs absorbed by HP.

The broadband video server division of HP had continuously cut back its product offerings until there was only a novel Internet Service Provider billing mediation platform.

The rump of the organization left after the general manager and functional management had all left HP to join startups, was formed into a standalone operation.

The product's architecture was indeed novel.  In particular it was unusually flexible in how much it could be customized and extended by integrators, Independent Software Vendors (ISV) and customers.   However, customers didn't like operating "non-product" customizations.

The major competitors were all startups.  This was the .com boom and these startups were benefiting from this positioning.  Partners and customers were seeking out these competitors.

Designed a web based developer kit, and created a proposal to the management to setup a new offering: a mechanism to enable product extensions to be standardized into the main product with HP taking over the support revenue and burden.  Main aspects were:
  • Presentation of the issues, value proposition and life-cycle of the contributions.
  • Wrote plan of implementation.

The proposal was accepted, and its resourcing was agreed.  The marketing manager took ownership for the implementation.

Emerging structure and dynamic forces of adaptation

integrating quality appropriate for each market

This page looks at schematic structures and their uses.  It discusses a number of examples:
  • Schematic ideas are recombined in creativity.
  • Similarly designers take ideas and rules about materials and components and combine them.
  • Schematic Recipes help to standardize operations.
  • Modular components are combined into strategies for use in business plans and business models.

As a working example it presents part of the contents and schematic details from the Adaptive Web Framework (AWF)'s operational plan.

Finally it includes a section presenting our formal representation of schematic goals.
Each goal has a series of associated complex adaptive system (CAS) strategy strings.
These goals plus strings are detailed for various chess and business examples.

This page uses an example to illustrate how:
  • A business can gain focus from targeting key customers,
  • Business planning activities performed by the whole organization can build awareness, empowerment and coherence.
  • A program approach can ensure strategic alignment.
